Surgery

In the modern world if we are suffering from some kind of disease or injury then we can be safe in the knowledge that the condition can at least be potentially treated through the use of surgery (dependent on the condition). Over thousands of years techniques used in the world of medicine have been refined so that those used today are the best that they can be, which is in stark contrast to the days gone by. In the past medical entrepreneurs have had to deal with the rules placed on them by the societies of the time, such as old laws banning the dissection of the human body. This meant that people did not know human anatomy and had to deduce matters using pigs or other animals. Thankfully, today we do not have that problem and the knowledge of human anatomy is detailed and specific. It means that surgeons operating today have a great understanding of the human body.

Surgical procedures vary in length and severity. Some are small routine procedures that might not take very long and allow the patient to return to their daily routine fairly quickly. However, others may take longer, requiring the patient to stay in hospital for some time with the possibility of further procedures to come. It differs from case to case and is dependent upon the patient and their condition.

There are various different kinds of surgeries carried out by surgeons across the world. They can range from those that are used to treat life threatening illnesses or injuries to elective surgeries such as cosmetic surgeries where the patient has opted (and paid) for the surgery themselves. Certain surgical procedures are briefly touched upon below:

Cosmetic surgeries can range from breast augmentation procedures to rhinoplasty (nose jobs), abdominoplasty (tummy tucks), liposuction, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), otoplasty (ear surgery) and face lifts. In certain cases these surgeries could be carried out for a health benefit as well as for aesthetic reasons (such as rhinoplasty to help with someone’s breathing).

Surgery to remove cancerous tumours from the body comes under the name surgical oncology, which is usually combined with other treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy in the treatment of cancer.

Heart surgery can take the form of open heart surgery whereby the heart is exposed whilst the surgery takes place. There are various other options and it will all depend upon the condition as to what is the best form of action.
